UP anglers aren't about to let blizzards and 20-below-zero nights keep them from catching the big ones.
Every winter, the region sprouts several new communities as ice-fishing houses congregate at hot spots. Near Escanaba, where Little Bay de Noc knifes inland from Lake Michigan, hundreds of shacks dot the thick ice.After visiting this village, drop by downtown Escanaba to warm up at the Swedish Pantry Restaurant. Lingonberries are a hot item in the little brick eatery with its cheerful yellow-and-blue sign. At breakfast, the tart imported gems top crepe like Swedish Pancakes. At dinner, order them on Swedish meatballs.
European ethnic foods fuel winter sports on the UP. The dishes are legacy of the immigrants who came to the region in the 1800s to work the copper and iron mines.
